🐾 Frequently Asked Questions – Importing Pets to Kenya
1. What documents are required to bring my pet into Kenya?
You’ll need:
-
A valid rabies vaccination certificate
-
A recent veterinary health certificate (issued within 7 days of travel)
-
An import permit from the Kenyan authorities
-
Copies of all documents (keep originals with the pet during travel)
2. Does my pet need a microchip to enter Kenya?
Microchips are not mandatory, but highly recommended for identification and future international travel.
3. Is quarantine required when importing a pet to Kenya?
No quarantine is required if all paperwork and vaccinations are correct and up to date before travel.
4. What vaccinations are needed for my pet?
-
Rabies vaccine (administered at least 30 days, but no more than 12 months, before travel unless a 3-year vaccine is clearly indicated)
-
Other common vaccines (like DHPP for dogs or FVRCP for cats) are also advised
5. Can pets arrive in Kenya as accompanied baggage?
Most pets must arrive as manifest cargo. However, some airlines (like Lufthansa, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines) allow small pets (cats or small dogs) to travel as accompanied baggage. Confirm with your airline before booking.
6. Do I need an agent to help with the process?
Yes, working with a professional pet relocation company—like ours—can simplify the process and help avoid delays or issues at customs.
7. What happens when my pet arrives in Kenya?
-
The pet will go through customs clearance
-
Import charges will apply (regardless of whether the pet traveled as cargo or accompanied)
-
A copy of all documents should be available, with originals traveling with the pet
8. Is it safe for my pet to fly to Kenya?
Yes, if you use a reputable airline and ensure all travel crates, documents, and health checks are in order. We recommend choosing airlines experienced with live animal transport.
9. Can I bring exotic pets into Kenya?
Some exotic animals may require special permits or may be restricted. Check with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for guidelines.
10. How far in advance should I start preparing?
Start preparing at least 30–60 days before your intended travel date to ensure all paperwork, vaccinations, and logistics are in place.
11. I have a Pit bull. Can I bring him to Kenya?
There are no banned dog breeds in Kenya. Therefore, if all the import requirements are met, you will be able to import your Pit bull into Kenya.
Flying with a “dangerous” dog isn’t simple. If you have such a dog, we recommend you read the following article – Flying A Dangerous Dog
